ITAD stands for IT Asset Disposition. It is something most people do not think about often, especially in their professional lives, unless they are IT managers or work in operations. Yet the ITAD industry is responsible for the smooth functioning of countless of business as well as managing the environmental impact of eWaste.
We've all looked at our computer at some point and thought, "I think it's time for an upgrade." Businesses often do this, though on a larger scale. In order to stay competitive in an economy that is deeply reliant on technology, it is necessary for companies to periodically assess the state of their systems and see where upgrades are required.
This is where ITAD companies come in. They can assess the overall state of a company's technologies and make recommendations on which equipment may need to be upgraded and which is fine for the time being. When it is determined that assets are no longer necessary or should be replaced, ITAD companies can help decomission those assets to make way for the new ones.
With old and unused assets pulled out, there are still important steps to complete. Many reputable ITAD companies will offer data sanitization services. This ensures that no company or personal data is left on any machines that the business has decided to dispose of.
Just because a company has determine they no longer need equipment, that does not mean it may not have value elsewhere. An ITAD company will determine if there may be a viable second life for the equipment - perhaps with smaller firms or with individual consumers. If there is a secondary market for the equipment, an ITAD company will work to refurbish the equipment to salable condition and receive a fair market price for the assets.
In many instances, a portion of these proceeds are returned to the company that decomissioned the equipment. They can then use this money for their technology upgrades. At the same time, customers who purchase equipment from ITAD companies get a good deal on useful equipment and help extend the life of equipment, preventing it from becoming eWaste.
